How To Read Your Car Tires

To maximize your car’s tires, check the pressure in them regularly. For me, it has become a once-a-week ritual. The best time to check is when the car tires are cool – this would give you accurate readings. Do not overlook your spare tire, of course.

Do examine your car tires visually also. The car tires have much to tell once they start to show wear. Below are some tips as you check your car tires:

1) When the center of the tread is worn more than the edges, this means the car tire has been consistently overinflated.

2) If the tread is worn in twin tracks running parallel to the center, this means the car tire has been consistently underinflated.

3) If the tread is worn on one side or the other, that means that you need to have camber alignment.

4) If the car tire is wearing in random spots, it may mean that the wheel is out of balance.

So, it is important to consult your car owner’s manual to find out the recommended tire pressure and make sure that you stay within the suggested PSI (pounds per square inch) range. This will solve tips 1 and 2. For 3 and 4, see your mechanic, or a tire shop and get the wheels aligned and balanced.
