Location of Troubles
Normal motor oil consumption in a modern vehicle’s engine should not go beyond one quart every 1,000 miles. Certain defects or malfunctions, however, can cause wastage through any or all of the following paths.
1. Normal leakage, such as the rear or front main bearing, accessory shaft bearings, or inadequately sealed joints such as the oil pan or valve covers.
2. By being passed in excessive amounts from the crank case into the combustion chamber, or, in other words, oil pumping.
3. Oil working its way into the combustion chamber through the inlet valve ports by way of loose valve-stem guides or a defective vacuum-pump diaphragm.
