If you hear some tapping from somewhere in the engine, possible sources and ways to analyze or cure them are:
1) Valve Train (if rhythmic) – Check the oil level; with the valve cover off, make sure there is enough oil on the parts
2) Rocker Shaft – Check, tighten rocker shaft bolts (on overhead valve engines)
3) Mechanical Lifters – Adjust lifters
4) Exhaust Manifold or Gasket break at pipe joint – Tighten manifold; replace the gasket
5) Burred Timing Gears – Check with stethoscope on timing cover; replace gears
If you hear some squealing from somewhere in the engine, possible sources and ways to analyze or cure them are:
Possible sources Ways to Analyze or Cure
1) Worn or damaged drive belts – Check tension; replace belt
2) Loose drive belt – Tighten belt
3) Defective accessory bearing – Install rebuilt unit
4) Air-conditioning compressor – Spray shaft seal with refrigerant oil
5) Worn rocker arms, ball studs, or shafts – With valve cover off, listen to each rocker with engine running, then replace worn parts and clean engine with purge solvent
